One of the easiest ways of informing such as the gas and electric company that you are moving is by going online and making use of one of the websites that will allow you to quickly inform many people at once by filling in the details of your old address and your new one and then choosing from a list of utility providers, charity, banks, insurance companies e.t.c and the print out the letter. This can be one way of informing them of a change of address in the UK. This can save you an enormous amount of time and stress. Some companies offering a change of address service will also allow you to send the form electronically for those who will accept a change of address this way.
You of course can always choose to do this yourself if you are not a fan of computers or do not have access to one. To help you to do this you will need to make list of all the people that you need to notify of your change of address. Here are just some of the many that you need to consider.
- Friends and family of course unless you specifically want to remain incognito
- Your employer, Doctor, Dentist, children’s school
- Bank, building society, credit card company, rental and mail order company
- Gas, electric, phone, council tax, tax office, DVLA
If you don’t want to use the computer then you can write out one standard letter and then leave blank spaces for you to put in the name and then have this photocopied at your local library. You can then fill in the name of the company you want to let know and then post it. However this will cost a great deal of money in stamps and envelopes so you will have to budget for this. Some websites will also have templates which are free of charge and which you can print out on your home computer and then sign and send.
Whichever option you take for informing people of your change of address you need to ensure that you do it well in advance and if you have made a check list then you need to include this in your list and tick it off as you do the task. Of course when moving you might want or need to switch suppliers when it comes to gas and electric and if this is the case then you need to change this over. You will also have to ensure that you have the gas and electric stopped for your old home and then new switched on for when you arrive. The same would apply to the telephone service. You also need to ensure that you have caught up on any bills that are due before you leave.
