Moving With Your Pets

Moving is a very stressful time, there is a million and ones to think about and do, if you have children then they will probably be stressed and feeling anxious too about the move and then if you have pets you also have to consider them when moving. Pets pick up on anxious owners and will feel that something is wrong or about to happen and so may need some extra petting and reassurance. There are also many things you are able to do to ensure that the move with pets goes along as smoothly as possible.

On the actual day of the move one of the best things you are able to do for yourself and your pet is to make sure they are well away from the home. Ideally pets will be less stressed if they stay with a family member that are used to and perhaps who they have stopped with before, say while you went on holiday. This will make the whole process of the move on the day a lot easier. For one you will not have the worry about keeping an eye on your pet and two, you will not have the worry that they will escape through an open door when the movers arrive.

If you have pets such as tropical fish or pond fish that you are taking with you to the new home there are pet stores that will offer storage facilities and “board” them just as they would cats and dogs while you get the tank and filtration system up and running. If the fish are pond fish and there is a new pond waiting for their arrival with any luck you should be able to make the transition a few days beforehand. A specialist aquatics store will be able to supply you with bags and packing crates for fish and give you information on how to transfer and acclimatise fish to their new pond in the least stressful way.

If you cannot bear to part with pet such as a cat or dog or you do not have anywhere they can go during the move then you will need to ensure that they are safe on the day. A timid cat or dog could be frightened by the movers and all that is going on around the home and could either run out of an open door or even bite. Therefore you will need to make sure that you have a large enough crate for the cat or dog to be put into and that you have a good supply of drinking water and the dogs bowl and food. If you are travelling a long distance to your new home then you will have to make stops to allow your dog to stretch their legs and take a vets advice if your pet is travel sick.

When you reach your new home it will take your pet some time to get used it the new surroundings. Hopefully your pet will be secure in their new home with a large garden which is fenced in. The majority of pets will be off and exploring their new surroundings in next to no time, however make sure that you give them plenty of attention and of course no matter how busy you are they will need their nightly walk before bed.
