Packing Tips
We all know that moving home or office can be a big headache, but with adequate planning and preparation your move can be headache free. To give yourself one less thing to worry about, it makes good sense to use proper packing materials and boxes to protect your belongings. Most moving firms if not all offer packing services and removal boxes. It would be a good idea to let them do the packing if you are unsure of what to do. The movers will know the right type of box and size box to use to pack your different belongings. So with appropriate planning and expert help your move can be a smooth and successful one.
Below are a few tips and pointer to take into consideration when packing and moving your home or office. You MUST remember that if you try to do it and get it wrong it will cost both valuable time and money.
• If you decide to pack yourself you should make sure you use the right packing materials, moving box, bubble wraps etc. Make sure you label the boxes stating the contents and which room of your house it came from. This will make it a lot easier when you are unpacking at your new house.
• When moving you will be obligated to stand all the cost of your move or if your company will pay for you but either way you should try to get the best value for your money. Shop around for removal quotes and estimates. Collect up to 5-6 quotes from different movers. Don’t just get them to give you a quote over the phone. Request for them to visit your house or office to see exactly what your requirements are and the size of the job. When you are happy get them to give you this quote in writing so as all parties know where they stand.
• Professional removal companies will use specialised moving boxes to pack and transport your belongings, special crates for your computer and electronic equipment. Don’t try to cut corners on the cost of packing materials. Because as mentioned above if you make a mistake then it will cost you. REMEMBER if you pack your own boxes the mover will not compensate you for and damages to your belongings unless they play a direct part in causing such damage. Pleases read the movers terms and conditions.
• If you want to reduce the cost of your move then you could do some of the packing yourself. Items such as bed linen, towels, kid’s toys and clothes etc, fragile items such as antiques and paintings, glass and kitchenware should be left for the professionals. They will have the necessary experience to safely pack and move you fragile belongings. If you still decide to pack glass items make sure you pack them between towels and linen, so they won’t move or knock against each other and break.
• Make sure you pack and clearly label a few boxes you want to be opened first at you new house. These boxes will contain your medicines and immediate necessities that will be needed right away after your move. Ask the mover to put these on the van last.
• Ensure you pack heavy items such as books etc. in small boxes. Remember not all removal men are body builders. Use the larger boxes to pack your bedding and clothes etc. The rule of thumbs the heaver “the heavier the box the easier it is to drop”. Chances are if you can lift it up then the mover should be ok with it.
• It is recommended to finish all or most of the packing before the actual moving day. Most movers will upon request do your packing the day before. This very helpful if you have to be out of your old property by a certain time.
