Tips For Obtaining Moving Insurance

When planning your move and booking a moving company in the UK then you have to make a wise choice and find a company that you are happy with and who offers a competitive quote and the right type of service for your needs. Along with this you will want to make sure that your belongings are covered if they should get damaged whilst they are in transit or while the movers are packing if you have chosen to have them pack your items for you. Therefore when comparing companies you need to know if they have insurance and what is and is not covered.

The moving company you choose should offer different types of insurance depending on your needs and should layout the cost of the insurance for you so that you know exactly how much it would cost. Although it might be boring you do need to read the small print of anything you have to sign before signing, as if you should come to make a claim you could find yourself not able to if the small print has exclusions.

You also need to know what type of moving insurance you have. For example if an item should get damaged and you have taken out old for new then you would get what the item was worth today. However if the insurance takes into account depreciation then you would not get as much as the item was worth.

You could also look into what your home insurance covers. If you have covered the contents of your home then the items could be covered in that policy and you might not need to take out any additional cover. Or your insurance company could give you moving insurance for a lot lower cost than taking it with the moving company. However again, you would have to read the terms and conditions of any small print before taking out moving insurance this way.

If you have any items which are over a certain amount and which are very valuable then you will have to declare these items and what they are worth. Just because you have taken out insurance this does not automatically mean that everything will be covered. For instance paintings and artwork might not be covered unless they were stated at the time of taking out the protection. You would of course have to check with the company beforehand to ensure that they will transport any items which are over a particular amount as you might not have any other option but to take out insurance. If smaller items are over a certain amount, say for instance jewellery then you might be better off taking these with you in the car rather than packing them and transporting with the moving company.

You should also check for how long you can wait before putting in a claim. This will probably vary greatly between moving companies, however it would be in your best interest to make a claim as soon as possible after the date of moving.
