Tips for Moving With Plants

When you move of course you have to take your plants with you and some people have a large number of both and small houseplants with some being specimen plants. There are of course any plants to consider which are specimen plants, these could be in the garden and patio and this could include hanging baskets. If you have paid out a large amount of money for garden plants they you will want to take them and some may require that you dig them up. You would have to ensure that your choice of removal firm in the UK is capable of handing and moving plants or you could choose to transport them yourself.

Houseplants depending on their size can be put into large cardboard boxes that are left open. You should use something to pack them tight so there is no space for them to move and soil to spill out. Bubble wrap can be used to good effect around individual pots or you can squash newspaper into balls and put this among the pots. If the plants have delicate foliage then you can buy supports from a garden centre to stick into the pots around the edge and then place a cover over the pots which are supported by the stick frames. This can stop foliage from being damaged during the move. Before putting the plants in storage make sure to give them water and allow them to drain well so that you do not end up with a wet box. Better yet tape some plastic carrier bags down and up the sides of the box.

If plants are very large then these may have to be transported separately, some garden centres will have large plastic bags specifically for transporting plants that pots can stand in and ties and string can come in very useful for any large bushy plants. String can be used to gather the plant together and then held loosely with ties. This is great when it comes to stopping damage to the foliage. If you look online then you may be able to buy tall narrow boxes and you may be able to put the plants into these to help get them to the new home in one piece.

Garden plants can also be transported in the same way; however you have to first get them out of the ground if they are planted. If they are in containers on the patio then you can remove their pots which could be easier for moving. If you are moving plants bare rooted then you will need something to cover the roots, this could be hessian which is tied around the base of the plant with the root ball intact or you are able to use plastic bags and tie them with ties. When digging up plants make sure to dig a large portion of the soil with the root ball in it. This will make transplanting them easier and they are more likely to survive. However you must keep the root ball moist at all times.
